Why should you do the hard things?
You can spend 20 years doing the same job and still have only one year of experience repeated 20 times.
Think about that for a moment.
Just because you've done something for years doesn't mean you've gotten better at it. You might have mastered your daily routine, learned how to avoid difficult situations, and become comfortable doing only what you know. But what happens when something changes? When equipment fails, someone needs an answer, or you face a problem you've never encountered before? At that moment, the knowledge you never pursued and the challenges you kept avoiding will catch up with you.
If you want to become more capable, more confident, and more valuable to the people around you, you have to be willing to do the hard things.
Because you'll never get any better if you don't.
The Dangers of Comfortable
Think about the people you've worked with over the years. Some are constantly learning, asking questions, and taking on challenges. Others seem perfectly content doing what they've always done.
Experience isn't simply how long you've spent doing something. It's what you've learned, the challenges you've faced, and the effort you've made to improve.
When you stop challenging yourself, your knowledge becomes limited to what you've already learned and whatever incidental information happens to come your way.
You become dependent on others to solve problems, explain situations, and make decisions.
What happens when there's an emergency? When equipment fails, or something unexpected occurs?
People who take the initiative to learn and understand their surroundings are better prepared to respond. Those who have avoided learning may find themselves waiting for someone else to tell them what to do.
Being around something doesn't mean you understand it.
Knowledge Gives You Confidence
Understanding how things work can feel grounding. Without knowledge, situations can feel confusing. You rely on other people's opinions because you don't have enough understanding to form your own. But the more you learn, the more capable you become.
You recognize problems, ask better questions, and contribute meaningful ideas. You're no longer just following along; you're participating. In the oil and gas industry, this might mean taking the time to understand why a pump isn't building pressure rather than simply replacing parts until something works. Even if you don't solve the problem right away, you've gained knowledge that may help you tomorrow.
Learn to Push Against Resistance
Resistance is the effort required to accomplish something. It might be physical, mental, or simply the discomfort of doing something you'd rather avoid. Like lifting weights, pushing against resistance makes you stronger. The trouble is that avoiding resistance becomes a habit.
You stop volunteering for unfamiliar tasks. You avoid difficult conversations. You let someone else figure things out.
Eventually, you become comfortable standing still.
But the opposite is also true. Every time you push through resistance, you strengthen your willingness to do it again.
Start With the Small Things
You don't need to make dramatic changes to begin. Start by getting up from your break when you know you should. Don't sit around talking for another ten minutes simply because it's easier. Ask the question you've been hesitant to ask. Learn something about the equipment you operate every day. Have that conversation you've been avoiding. These might seem like insignificant decisions, but they build habits. And habits shape who we become.
Fight Back Against Stasis
Stasis is a condition of little or no change. It happens when we become so comfortable with what we know that we stop trying to improve. The danger isn't that you'll suddenly become incapable. It's that you'll gradually stop becoming more capable. Whether at work, at home, or in your personal life, something difficult will always be worth doing. Don't wait until you're comfortable. Don't wait until you understand everything.
Start doing the hard things now.
Because the person you'll become tomorrow depends on the resistance you're willing to push against today.
